Kamama Lotome

Age: 21
Location: Nakuru
School: Elementary School
Orphan: Yes
TEP Number: KRNkOF-76

Kamama was less than eight years old when her parents began preparing to sell her as a child bride in return for two goats. This quietly happens too often in many impoverished areas of the world, as the families are so poor that they need goats for their milk, meat and blood to survive. Often, the only way to get a goat is by demanding it as a dowry in return for a daughter. Normally a daughter is worth four or more goats but Kamama's family was struggling to sell her for only two, because she is blind and it is considered very bad fortune in many tribes worldwide. At our IHF orphanage, Kamama is safe, happy and beginning school for the blind. Our wonderful volunteers brought her a Teddy bear and harmonica and she was overjoyed to hold such things, having known only a life of hunger. When she was told by her older sister Chemriach, that the Teddy bear was her baby who needed to be loved and held by her, Kamama broke out in a big grin, in spite of being ill with Malaria. See, we all need people to need us. Even our Teddy bears.
